  • Our experts will begin by prepping the wood fence for stain or paint. For existing fences, this means power washing the fence and replacing damaged boards or posts and broken gate hardware.

  • Don’t worry — before we start painting or staining your fence, we’ll take the time to protect landscapes, hardscapes, flowers, and shrubs from foot traffic and overspray.

  • Looking for a different color? We’ll help you find the perfect match! Nowadays, many homeowners have more color options other than shades of brown and black. Manufacturers can add pigment to stains now, which can give your fence that “painted” look.

Should I Paint or Stain My Fence?

We recommend using the same type of finish that was on the fence before or staining new wood since it’s more durable. Depending on the wood and climate, it’s fine to leave the wood as-is, but it may not last as long and turn gray. Mr. Handyman can help you make these decisions.

Fence Painting FAQ

Mr. Handyman has been helping homeowners repair, maintain, and enhance their spaces for over 25 years! We are the one-stop solution for everything on your to-do list. This includes answering your questions about home repairs, maintenance, and improvements. Here are answers to some of your most frequently asked questions about fence painting and staining services.

  • Use a wide, flat brush designed for exterior painting that is about four to six inches wide and has synthetic bristles if you are applying water-based paints. You want to use a paintbrush with natural bristles for oil-based paints. Choose a sturdy brush with long bristles to help cover larger areas quickly and reach between slats.

If your fence has rough or textured wood, using a brush with firm bristles will help the paint get into all the nooks and crannies. For large projects, you might also consider using a roller or sprayer to speed things up and using a brush for finishing touches or detailed areas.
